Orthopädie Technik, the most popular orthopaedic magazine in Europe, has dedicated an article of its February issue to our patient Stephan Büchler, a transfemoral amputee fitted with HYDEAL knee and DYNA C foot. Further to his successful participation (bronze medal) in the 2008 Extremity Games in Michigan (USA), the magazine wanted to know more about his unique and remarkable behaviour.
At the age of 17, Stephan was informed of his disease and has fought against death for two years, followed by a transfemoral amputation and his rebirth in extreme sports...
Stephan, who has always been fond of cycling, does not give up his hobby. He goes beyond his limits and gets involved in mountain-biking that becomes very soon an important part of his life.
« For me the most beautiful is to show this ability to the public. And when someone has a passion for extreme sports, an amputation will not put an end to it. I have not complained for a long time and I told me "anyone can manage it with two legS". »
Meanwhile, Stephan learns to become a CPO and manufactures himself his prosthesis.
Success comes in August 2008. After a 17 km downhill race, he wins the bronze medal for mountainbiking at the Extremity Games (the only transfemoral amputee on the podium).
« It is the most difficult race I have ever made. It comes around a lake and includes the most terrible hurdles - roots, stones and steep downhills. The organizers had warned that this race was not for beginners.»
This extreme athlete and CPO has chosen PROTEOR's HYDEAL knee after it was presented to him at a seminar in Germany during his training to become a CPO. Stephan immediatly trusted our knee (with no doubt). Now he wears it in association with a Dyna C foot that he discovered after its recent launching.
« I have used this knee for several years now and I am very satisfied with it. I also wear PROTEOR's Dyna C foot. I have no other modular component and only one prosthesis for all my activities. I have no sport leg ! ».
These components are not even prototypes.
Stephan do use standard components for mountain-biking races.
Stephan Büchler comes to international orthopaedic congresses to show his achievements in spite of his amputation (in 2008 in Leipzig -Germany, and in Nanjin -China).
« I showed PROTEOR's stand visitors what someone fitted with standard components can achieve (...). I made a beautiful mountain-biking show with achievements such as riding on the back wheel and jumping. As far as I know, today I am the only transfemoral amputee who can ride on the back wheel. ».
President of ‘'Fleshair'', the association of fun and extreme sports in Wismar (Germany), Stephan is fully involved in this field where handicap has no longer braking effects and rather provides the additional adrenalin required to face extreme sports dangers.
P.S. : Once again Stephan took part in mountainbiking and kayak competitions at the 2009 Extremity Games in Michigan (USA) last July with our support. He won a bronze medal for mountain-biking after a course that he found even tougher than in 2008. Stephan was the only amputee competing in this race.
